5 Myths About Electrolysis – Debunked

Electrolysis has been trusted for more than a century, yet it’s still one of the most misunderstood ways to remove hair. We hear the same worries in our Lehi studio every week: “It’s unbearable. It only works on some people. Laser made it obsolete.

Most of these are myths. Below we debunk five common electrolysis myths so you can decide with clear expectations.

Myth 1: Electrolysis Is Too Painful to Tolerate

The myth: You’ll be miserable the whole appointment.

The fact: Most clients describe electrolysis as a quick sting, warmth, or pinch. Comfort depends on the area (upper lip vs bikini), your cycle, caffeine that day, and how hydrated your skin is.

Some clients prefer topical numbing before appointments for sensitive areas like the upper lip to manage pain. We can also adjust settings or modalities to find what works best for you. Our goal is to keep your skin happy while still treating the hair properly. Our six tips for a better electrolysis experience cover hydration, exfoliation, and numbing—simple things that change how treatment feels.

Bottom line: Discomfort is real but usually manageable. Tell us if you’re anxious; we’d rather adjust pace than have you white-knuckle through a session.

Myth 2: Electrolysis Only Works for Certain Skin or Hair Types

The myth: It’s only for pale skin and dark hair, like laser.

The fact: Electrolysis works on all skin tones and all hair colors because we treat the follicle, not pigment in the shaft.

Laser hair removal can be fantastic when melanin is high enough and the device matches your skin safely. It often struggles with blond, gray, red, and some fine facial hair, exactly where electrolysis shines. Read why electrolysis fits light hair better than laser.

Bottom line: If you’ve been told “laser can’t help this hair,” electrolysis may be the missing piece.

Myth 3: Electrolysis Isn’t Really Permanent

The myth: It’s just another temporary fix, or one session should finish the job.

The fact: Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method for permanent hair removal. When a follicle is fully treated, that hair should not return.

Two nuances people confuse:

  1. You need multiple sessions because hairs grow in cycles, only a fraction are treatable at once. See what to expect at your first appointment and how follicles and electrolysis interact.
  2. Hormones can activate new follicles (PCOS, menopause, medications). Cleared follicles stay cleared; new coarse hairs may still appear elsewhere. Light vellus hairs may get bigger and thicker with changes in hormones or increase in androgens.

Bottom line: Permanent per treated follicle, not one-and-done for a whole zone in a single visit.

Myth 4: Electrolysis Is Outdated

The myth: Old technology replaced by laser.

The fact: Electrolysis isn’t frozen in 1920. Today’s work uses precise probes, thermolysis and blend modalities, and settings tuned to your skin, far more controlled than vintage stereotypes suggest.

Laser and IPL are newer tools, not universal replacements. Many Utah Valley clients use laser for larger dark-haired zones and electrolysis for face, blondes, grays, and cleanup. The methods stack; they don’t cancel each other.

Bottom line: Electrolysis is an “old” method of hair removal, but it is still relevant because it works.

Myth 5: Electrolysis Takes Too Long to Be Worth It

The myth: Session-by-session work isn’t worth the calendar time.

The fact: Electrolysis is slower per square inch than laser. You’re trading years of shaving, waxing, and ingrowns for something that actually stops the hair at the root.

Smaller areas like chin, brows, and lip are easier to fit into a normal week than trying to clear both legs in one go. Regular appointments add up. Prep and aftercare make a real difference between visits.

Bottom line: The time you put in upfront is often worth it for stubborn facial hair that laser never quite cleared.
