Top Electrolysis Aftercare Tips to Protect Your Skin and Maximize Results
You’ve started electrolysis for permanent hair removal, amazing choice. The work doesn’t stop when you leave the chair. Electrolysis aftercare is how you calm skin, avoid setbacks, and get the most from every session.
Whether you’re fresh off your first visit or you’re months into a chin or lip plan, these electrolysis aftercare tips are what we walk through with clients in our Lehi studio. If anything here conflicts with what your electrologist told you for your skin, follow their instructions first.
Pair this with how to prepare before your appointment, prep and aftercare work as a team.
How Do You Treat Skin After Electrolysis?
Think of the first 24–48 hours as protection mode: clean, cool, gentle, and sun-smart. Below are the nine habits we see make the biggest difference.
1. Keep the Treated Area Clean and Dry
Gently cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to wash away bacteria. For the first day, skip heavy creams or oils that can clog pores. Clean skin is one of the simplest aftercare tips after electrolysis, and one of the easiest to skip when you’re busy.
2. Don’t Touch, Pick, or Scratch
Picking raises the risk of scarring or infection. Minor scabbing happens sometimes, let it heal on its own.
You might also see a light lymph crust (dried clear fluid from normal healing). It looks like tiny flakes or a fine crust. Don’t pick it; let it shed naturally so the skin underneath recovers smoothly.
3. Skip Makeup After Facial Electrolysis (Briefly)
After facial electrolysis, give skin 24–48 hours without foundation or heavy concealer when you can. Makeup can clog irritated pores and make redness last longer.
4. Avoid Heat and Heavy Sweating
Hold off on hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense workouts for a day or two. Heat and sweat can sting sensitive skin and introduce bacteria to freshly treated follicles.
5. Use Soothing Products (Not Harsh Ones)
Aloe vera or witch hazel can feel calming for many people. Avoid alcohol-based toners or strong actives right after treatment. They often burn or dry skin out.
6. Protect Skin from the Sun
UV exposure after electrolysis can lead to dark marks or slower healing. Wear a hat or use a gentle SPF 30+ (SPF 50 if you’re very fair or prone to pigment changes) when you’re outside, especially in Utah’s bright seasons.
This pairs with the sun guidance in our six comfort tips before you even come in.
7. Moisturize Lightly
A light, fragrance-free moisturizer supports healing. More isn’t better, go thin and soothing, not heavy occlusive layers over irritated skin.
8. Keep Your Treatment Schedule Steady
Consistent appointments matter. Hair grows in cycles; missing sessions often stretches the timeline, especially on coarse or hormonal patterns. When life gets busy, reschedule instead of disappearing for months. We’d rather adjust the plan than start over from scratch.
9. Know What’s Normal and When to Call
Normal after electrolysis for many clients:
- Mild redness or warmth
- Slight swelling around treated follicles
- Occasional lymph crust or light scabbing
Reach out to your electrologist if you see spreading redness, pus, fever, or irritation that feels worse instead of settling within a reasonable window. We’d rather hear early than have you guess.
Ingrown Hairs and Between-Session Care
Good aftercare also lowers the odds of ingrown hairs while follicles are clearing. Gentle exfoliation can usually resume after the first couple of days, ask us when your skin is ready. Avoid aggressive scrubs or retinoids until we say your barrier is back to baseline.
