Six Tips To Make Your Electrolysis Experience Better
Permanent hair removal with electrolysis is worth the effort, but let’s be honest: it takes dedication. Some days are easier than others. Over the years, these electrolysis tips are what we share in our Lehi studio to make appointments more comfortable, help skin heal calmly, and keep your progress steady.
If you’re wondering how to make electrolysis less painful, small habits before you arrive often matter as much as what we do during treatment. None of this replaces your electrologist’s instructions for your skin, but it’s a solid starting point.

1. Skip Caffeine Before Your Appointment
Caffeine can make skin more reactive for some people. If you’re sensitive, save coffee, energy drinks, or diet soda until after your session, not right before you hop in the chair.

2. Hydrate (Seriously)
Hydrated skin tends to tolerate treatment better. Drink water the day before and the day of your visit. Well-hydrated tissue can also conduct current more effectively, which supports clean follicle treatment. It’s not magic, but it helps.

3. Exfoliate Gently Before You Come In
A mild exfoliation before your appointment can clear dead skin and debris around follicle openings. That can make insertions smoother for your electrologist and less uncomfortable for you. Don’t scrub raw or use harsh acids the night before, gentle is the goal.

4. Watch Sun Exposure and Electrolysis
Electrolysis and sun exposure don’t mix well on irritated skin. Avoid sun exposure on the treatment area for a full week before appointments, ideally two when you can. That means skipping tanning and limiting direct sun on the zone you’re having treated, not just the day before.
In the 24–48 hours right before a session, be extra careful: no fresh sunburn, no intentional tanning, and SPF 50+ when you’re outdoors. Sunburned skin is more painful to treat and needs time to heal first. Give a sunburn a week or two to fully heal before we treat that area. If you’re still pink or peeling, reschedule. We’d rather wait than work on skin that isn’t ready.

5. Topical Numbing Can Help
Numbing cream for electrolysis is an option many clients use on sensitive areas. If your electrologist approves it, apply topical numbing 30–50 minutes before treatment and cover with plastic wrap as directed. Yes, you’ll look a little odd, and for many people it’s worth it.
Ask us which products we recommend; not every cream is appropriate for every area.

6. Keep Skincare Simple Before Treatments
A steady skincare routine helps skin recover between visits. If you’re prone to dark marks after trauma, a cream with a tyrosinase inhibitor may be worth discussing with your provider. Pause retinoids and strong retinols for about a week before facial electrolysis. They can leave skin too reactive.
Pair good prep with good follow-through: our electrolysis aftercare tips cover what helps in the days after treatment.
Putting It Together
None of these tips work like a magic switch on their own. But when you skip the extra coffee, drink some water, exfoliate gently, stay out of the sun long enough, and baby your skin a little before and after? Appointments usually go smoother. Show up sunburned, dried out, or loaded up on retinol and we’re often playing catch-up before we even start on hair.
