Preparing for Your Electrolysis Appointment: Do’s and Don’ts for the Best Results
If you’re starting your journey toward permanent hair removal with electrolysis, or you’re getting ready for your next session, congratulations on taking that step. You’re making a real investment in yourself. A little know-how about how to prepare for electrolysis can make your appointments more comfortable and help your skin heal well afterward.
Electrolysis is precise and effective, but your skin needs a little help in the days before treatment. Below are the simple do’s and don’ts we share with clients in Lehi and across Utah Valley before an electrolysis appointment. If anything here differs from what your electrologist told you for your skin or treatment area, follow their guidance first.
How to Prepare for Electrolysis Before Your Appointment
Think of this as your electrolysis prep cheat sheet.
DO: Let the hair grow out slightly
Before your session, the hair in the area we’re treating should be about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, just long enough for us to see and treat each follicle accurately. If it’s too short, it can be hard to target; if it’s too long, we may trim it in the office.
DON’T: Tweeze, wax, or thread
Please avoid anything that pulls hair from the root (tweezing, waxing, or threading) for at least 3–4 weeks before your appointment. Those methods disrupt the follicle and make electrolysis less effective. Shaving is fine. It doesn’t touch the root.
DO: Gently exfoliate the day before
A gentle exfoliation the day before can help clear away dead skin cells so we can access follicles more easily. Just don’t overdo it, skip harsh scrubs that could leave your skin irritated.
DON’T: Over-exfoliate or use harsh products
Hold off on strong exfoliants, chemical peels, and actives like retinol, retinoids, or AHAs/BHAs on the treatment area for a few days before your session. When skin is already sensitized, retinol and electrolysis together can feel rougher than they need to. Pausing those products for a short time usually helps.
DO: Stay hydrated and eat a light snack
Well-hydrated skin tends to respond better to treatment. Drink water the day before and the day of your visit. If you’re in for a longer session, a light snack beforehand can steady your blood sugar and sometimes ease discomfort.
DON’T: Load up on caffeine or alcohol right before
Both can make skin more sensitive for some people. If you can, skip them for at least a few hours before you come in.
DON’T: Tan or sunburn the treatment area before your visit
Electrolysis and sun exposure don’t mix well on irritated skin. Avoid sun on the treatment area for a full week before your appointment, ideally two when you can. Skip tanning and limit direct sun on the zone we’re treating.
Right before you come in, be extra careful for 24–48 hours: use SPF 50+ outdoors, and don’t book if you’re pink or peeling from a burn. Sunburned skin usually needs a week or two to heal fully before treatment. If you’re not sure your skin is ready, call us. We’d rather reschedule than treat skin that isn’t healed.
DO: Shower and arrive with clean skin
Come in with clean, product-free skin in the area we’re treating. Skip lotions, oils, deodorant (for underarms), or makeup on that zone when you can. Clean skin lowers the chance of irritation or infection.
DON’T: Schedule during your most sensitive days (if you menstruate)
Hormonal shifts can make skin touchier in the days leading up to a period. If you’ve noticed that pattern, try to book outside that window when possible.
Bonus tip: Wear comfortable clothing
If we’re treating your bikini line, underarms, legs, or another body area, loose clothes afterward help. You won’t want tight fabric rubbing on freshly treated skin.
Can You Shave Before Electrolysis?
We get this one a lot: yes, you can shave (and trim) between sessions. Shaving doesn’t disturb the follicle the way waxing or plucking does, and many clients shave as part of their normal routine while they’re in treatment.
What we do ask: don’t wax or tweeze the area in the weeks before your visit, and do grow hair out to the length we request, often a few days of stubble on the face, sometimes a bit longer on body areas. Not sure how many days to let it grow? Just ask at your free consultation or text us before your next visit.
If it’s your very first time, our post on what to expect at your first electrolysis appointment walks through the whole visit step by step.
Retinol, Acids, and Skincare Before Treatment
If you use retinol or strong acids, plan to pause them on the treatment area for a few days unless we’ve told you otherwise. The same goes for benzoyl peroxide and anything that leaves skin raw or peeling. Let fresh peels heal fully before you come in (sunburn timing is covered above).
On prescription skincare or extra-sensitive skin? Tell us when you book. We’d rather adjust the plan upfront than have you show up wishing you’d mentioned it.
Quick Recap: What to Do Before Electrolysis
- Let hair grow to about 1/8–1/4 inch (or whatever we asked for)
- Shave between sessions if you need to, skip wax and tweezers for 3–4 weeks
- Exfoliate gently the day before; go easy on actives right before treatment
- Limit sun on the treatment area for 1–2 weeks before; SPF 50+ outdoors; no active sunburn
- Hydrate, snack lightly if it’s a long visit, and arrive with clean skin
- Wear something comfortable if we’re treating a larger area
