What to Expect at Your Electrolysis Consultation

Electrolysis consultation and treatment room at Lumen in Lehi

Your first electrolysis appointment can feel like a big step. It should feel hopeful, not scary. Whether you’ve been searching electrolysis in Lehi, electrolysis near me, or you’re still deciding between laser and electrolysis, knowing what to expect takes most of the nerves away.

At Lumen, new clients usually start with a free consultation. That visit is part education, part planning, and often includes a short test treatment so you can feel the process on your own skin. Here’s how we structure it.

Free Consultation vs Your First Paid Session

Consultation (free): Health history, goals, how electrolysis works, whether you’re a good candidate, and when appropriate, a brief test spot with baseline settings.

First treatment session: Focused clearing on the areas you choose, once you’re comfortable with the plan. Many people book treatment after the consult; some need time to think. Both are normal.

Step 1: Paperwork and Health History

When you arrive, we’ll have you complete a short intake form with medical history, current medications, skin conditions, and what’s bothering you (chin, lip, brows, body areas, etc.).

Some medications and skin situations can affect healing or sensitivity. We review that upfront because safety comes before speed. If something needs a doctor’s input first, we’ll say so honestly.

Step 2: How Electrolysis Works (In Plain Language)

We’ll walk through how electrolysis treats individual follicles with a fine probe and controlled current. It’s the FDA-recognized method for permanent hair removal.

You’ll hear about the hair growth cycle:

  • Anagen – active growth (best time to treat)
  • Catagen – transition
  • Telogen – resting

Only a portion of hairs are in anagen at once, which is why lasting results take a series of appointments, often months to a couple of years for dense facial areas, depending on hormones, hair coarseness, and how often you can come in.

Step 3: Hair Growth Before You Arrive

For the consult, and any first treatment, we typically ask for about 3–5 days of hair growth in the area (long enough to see, not so long you’re hiding it). That lets us assess pattern and treat accurately.

Full prep details live in our before-appointment do’s and don’ts: skip waxing and tweezing beforehand, gentle skincare, hydration, and what to avoid the day of.

Step 4: Test Treatment and Baseline Settings

If you’re a candidate, we often do a small test treatment during the free consult. We adjust current and timing for your skin and hair. Your baseline helps you learn:

  • What the sensation feels like (often a quick heat or pinch)
  • How your skin reacts (mild redness usually fades within hours for many clients)
  • Whether the plan feels doable for your life and budget

This is also where laser vs electrolysis gets practical: if your hair is blond, gray, or fine on the face, we’ll explain why electrolysis may be the permanent path, and when laser might still help other zones.

How Long Is the First Visit?

Plan on your consultation taking 30 minutes or so.

What to Bring and Wear

  • Clean skin in the treatment area (no heavy makeup on the zone if we’re treating the face)
  • A list of medications and supplements
  • Loose, comfortable clothing if we’re discussing body areas
  • Questions written down. People always think of one more in the parking lot

Does the First Appointment Hurt?

Honest answer: you’ll probably feel something, but most clients say it’s less painful than they feared. Comfort tips: hydration, skipping caffeine, numbing when approved, are in our six comfort tips.

What Happens After You Leave

You’ll leave with:

  • A clearer picture of the process and timeline
  • Personalized recommendations (areas, frequency, realistic pace)
  • A sense of whether you connect with your electrologist. Fit matters for a long-term plan

We’ll suggest aftercare for the first 24–48 hours and how to book follow-ups. Hormonal hair (like PCOS)? We’ll talk maintenance openly so expectations match your body.

Why the First Visit Matters

Electrolysis works well with patience and consistency. Clients who understand that upfront tend to stick with the plan and feel better about progress between sessions. The first appointment also gives us the opportunity to find baseline settings that work for you and gives you the chance to see what electrolysis feels like before your first full appointment.
